The 30-year-old Italy international suffered a serious injury in the 1-0 weekend win at home to Catania, with subsequent scans revealing a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

However, Gattuso is already focusing on his recovery, saying: "I'm taking this as a new challenge. It's just a battle to win.

"I am disappointed, but I need to look forward. I have won lots of tests in my career and I will win this one.

"I'm really gutted by what has happened, but I think I can recover ahead of schedule."
