12/17/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Vancouver Canucks will honor one of the greatest players in franchise history tonight before they host the Edmonton Oilers in a Northwest Division clash at GM Place.
Prior to tonight's game, the Canucks will honor former captain Trevor Linden by raising his No. 16 into the rafters. He will join Stan Smyl's No. 12 as the only two numbers ever retired in team history.
Linden spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Canucks, becoming the youngest captain in team history when he earned the "C" as a 21-year-old in 1991-92. In 19 seasons, the 38-year-old posted 375 goals, 492 assists and 867 points in 1,382 games. He also notched 99 points (34 goals, 65 assists) in 124 playoff games, 118 of those coming with Vancouver. He had 25 points (12g, 13a) in 24 games during Vancouver's 1994 playoff run that ended with a Game 7 defeat to the New York Rangers.
The two-time All-Star and runner-up to the Calder Trophy in 1989, who also spent time with Montreal, the New York Islanders and Washington, retired as the Canucks' all-time leader in games (1,140) and assists (415) and second in goals (318) and points (733).
Tonight's event comes on the heels of the Canucks possibly adding other of the NHL's all-time greats to its roster. According to general manager Mike Gillis, free agent Mats Sundin is just days away from deciding where he would like to play this season.
According to Gillis, Sundin is deciding between Vancouver and the New York Rangers. The 37-year-old Sundin netted 32 goals a year ago with Toronto and has 555 goals, 766 assists and 1,321 points in 1,305 career games.
The Canucks enter this game tied with Calgary for first place in the division, as both teams have 37 points. Vancouver was last in action on Sunday when it began a four-game homestand with a 5-3 victory over Florida.
Pavol Demitra scored twice and the Canucks erased a two-goal deficit with five consecutive goals. Ryan Kesler had a goal and an assist while Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk also scored for Vancouver, which had dropped six of eight coming into Sunday.
Cory Schneider allowed three goals on 21 shots to get the win, which improved Vancouver to 8-3-1 at home this year.
The Oilers were in action last night and are coming off one of the worst defensive performances in club history, a 9-2 setback to Chicago. It marked the first time Edmonton allowed that many goals since a 9-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on December 28, 1992.
Shawn Horcoff and Marc Pouliot scored for the Oilers, who have dropped two of three following a three-game win streak. Mathieu Garon started for Edmonton between the pipes but was pulled midway through the second period after he allowed five goals on 21 shots. Dwayne Roloson allowed another four tallies in relief, making 19 saves.
The setback ended a three-game road trip (1-2) for the Oilers, who will aim to improve on their 10-8-0 road record tonight before returning home for back-to- back contests.
These two teams have split a pair of meetings already this season. Edmonton has lost two of three and five of its last seven in Vancouver.

American Idol Betting Odds: Season 6
The online gambling websites are in the process of deciphering each American Idol contestant and his or her chances of winning Season 6 to come up with the early American Idol betting lines.
Tim Dalton of MySportsbook.com has been locked away in a soundproof room coming up with all the latest tallies, we are told. "American Idol has become one of the most significant betting events of the year," claims Jack Black of MySportsbook.com. "Last year, millions were bet during the season across the globe, not just in America. It's tough early on since we really do not have a glimpse as to how well each of these individuals will perform solo on a week-to-week basis. It's like Week 1 of the NFL. Pre-season means nada!
We do know the 24 finalists however.
Sanjaya Malakar is the young man whose sister failed to make it into the Top 24. He's very low key but - unless he totally flubs - will probably win over the young girlie vote for a few weeks anyway. He's too young to go all the way, according to Payton O'Brien.
Brandon Rogers - Who?
Phil Stacy is the military guy who missed his daughter's birth because of the Memphis audition. He should go a good distance.
Chris Sligh - He's got the humor and in many ways he's the Anti-American Idol much like last year's winner Taylor Hicks was. And this is why he'll probably get pretty far in this competition. He's chubby, white with a big curly afro....but more importantly, a great voice! People love "real", not "real cute" to go all the way.
"Blake Lewis should go far because of his uniqueness and looks. He's the boy next store with a twist - he beat boxes. But on top of this, he's a great singer, and I adore him," Payton O'Brien relayed.
A talented beat-boxer Blake Lewis was a hit during the group sing in Hollywood but Simon explained that this is a singing contest just before he told him he was “in.”
Paul Kim has caught our own roving reporter, Jenny Woo's eyes.
"I love the fact that there is a Korean American on the show and he is bound to get more Asians tuning into the show," Woo said from her Miami Beach estate. "There has never been a major presence of Asian-Americans on American Idol in the past. He's a hottie with a nice voice so that should help to take him far. Expect heavy betting action from the Asian community."
Sundance Head - He's not perfect, but he's got the personality that will take him through a few weeks, plus he's got the lineage (son of Roy Head - whose 1965 single, "Treat Her Right," hit No. 5 in the charts)
And the others:
Rudy Cardinas
AJ Tabaldo - the 5th time is the charm
Nicolas Pedro
Chris Richardson
Jared Cotter
The girls
"Melinda Doolittle has one of the best voices," says MySportsbook.com Reporter and an acclaimed dancer in her own right, Destiney Lewis. "It is great to see a back up singer step out like she has. The girl needs to gain more confidence but that can also be a positive. I think she will go far."
Alena Alexander - Those tears (she never seems to stop bawling) should get her far.
"Single mom Lakisha Jones I suspect will be a pretty big favorite entering Week 1 of the competition," says Destiny Williams. Jones is an excellent singer and down to earth. "She'll have a wide appeal," echoed O'Brien.
Nicole Trellis - Seems to exert confidence.
Amy Krebs - a powerful singer.
Antonella Barba
Gina Glocksen
Hailey Scanardo
Jordan Sparks
Stephanie Edwards
Leslie Hunt
Sabrina Sloan

The Major League Baseball season starts this weekend and MySportsbook.com, a leading online sportsbook for over 8 years, is the first to offer baseball sports betting lines on who will win the 2007 World Series.
"The World Series is the biggest baseball event in the sports betting world and MySportsbook.com is excited that we are first to market with betting lines on every team," says Tim Dalton, Marketing Director, MySportsbook.com. Going in to this weekend, MySportsbook.com's favorites to win the World Series are the New York Yankees at 7-2 and last year’s winners the Chicago White Sox at 9-2.
"These betting lines are ripe for the picking," Dalton added, "baseball fans know that the season is long and many factors, including players staying healthy, will affect these Future odds as the baseball season progresses.
